After six games in the pro-league, the Algerian academy international, Adem Zorgane, is like a fish in water in this very playful Charleroi team, which seems to correspond perfectly to the qualities of the former academy player. The men of Egards Still realize a beginning of season more than interesting. Decryption.
The arrival of a local player in Europe is very often strewn with pitfalls. The change of environment, the working methods and the distance from his family are three good reasons for not ticking the different boxes on the grid of objectives. Before Adem Zorgane, several players from the JMG Academy in Paradou crossed the Mediterranean to try their luck. Some have succeeded, Ramy Bensebaini, Hichem Boudaoui, others have not succeeded, EL modem, Meziani, Ibouzidène, Loucif often due unfortunately to bad circumstances (case of Ibouzidène, El Mouden and Loucif), others come from so settled as Naidji and Kadri.
So many different cases that show the complexity of an arrival on the Old Continent. The son of former Setif player Malik Zorgane, who played three seasons with the PAC and participated in the African Cup, arrived in Belgium much more seasoned on the sporting and psychological level.
Tactical maturity
Djamel Belmadi mentioned it when he called up the native of Setif last March: “He is a player with a certain maturity and understanding of the different situations in the game, at such a young age there is a form of intelligence,” he admitted, while Zorgane was the only local player called up for the training camp. This maturity is certainly one of the many reasons for the Algerian’s rapid adaptation in Belgium. Already coveted by the Red Bull group a few years ago, it is finally at Sporting Charleroi that the academy midfielder will settle down. Author of six assists and a goal in six Belgian Pro League games, the Fennec, who celebrated his first selection during the month of September 2021 against Djibouti (8-0), has acclimatised perfectly to Edward Still’s playing system. The Belgian coach, who favours a three-man defence, “sees football differently. He puts the attack at the centre of his principles,” confided a former teammate, Rudi Cossey.
He added : “Edward Still, through numbers, tries to understand what each player does with the ball. Looking at the profile of Charleroi’s new coach, we can see that Adem Zorgane has come to the right place at the right time. He can play as a sentinel or as a relay player, and he knows how to adapt to each position and how to respond to the duties of the latter. Against Brugge on Saturday, he often “switched” between two tactical organisations. In front of the defence in a 3-5-2 formation or as an advanced playmaker in a 3-4-3 formation, the 21-year-old’s technical quality and reading of the game allow him to be integrated into his team’s preferred passing patterns. In terms of numbers, the former academician is often in the top three of players touching the most balls. In the last match against the Belgian champions, the academician was even the Charleroi player who touched the most balls (69 balls). He often used the ball well, improving the possession of the Zebras.
Already praised in Belgium
With 11.1 and 10.9 kilometres covered respectively in the victory over Genk (2-3) and the narrow defeat against Brugge (0-1), Adem Zorgane was the player who covered the most distance on the green rectangle. His numerous passes and valuable recoveries contrast with the opinion of some observers of a player who had been described as very little active when losing the ball. Named player of the month in August by the fans of the current eighth-placed Pro League side, the academician had only played four games at the time and already had the confidence to surprise many in the Low Countries. His performances even allowed him to earn his first cap against Djibouti, with a 70th-minute start. There is no doubt that a new level has been reached for the player who is already on the books of RC Lens and Hertha Berlin.
When we know that many recruiters of European clubs travel through Belgium to study new profiles, we can legitimately think that at this rate, Adem Zorgane will not last long in the Belgian championship. The most astute observers of the latter are already amazed by the quality of the young Algerian academician of 21 years. As one of the commentators of the game between Charleroi and Brugge said: “For me, Zorgane gave a near perfect performance because he is there as a 6, he is there as an 8, he is able to dribble but also to recover balls. Frankly, he amazes me”, he admitted. Express adaptation.
