Yaya Toure has become assistant coach of Ukrainian club Olimpik Donetsk. The Ivorian had already played in the Ukrainian championship as a player in 2004-2005.
At 37 years of age, Yaya Touré is embarking on the new career to which he aspired after his fabulous years as a footballer. The Ivorian will become a coach and more precisely an assistant coach in Ukraine, a country he knows well since he played there during the 2004-2005 season. “I played in Donetsk after my time at Beveren, it was my second club in Europe,” the former midfielder recalled on the Olimpik website. Now I’m here to start my coaching career. Of course, I understand that Olimpik is not Metallurg, but I remember well how friendly and open people were in Donetsk.
Olimpik is the third club in the eastern Ukrainian city, behind the well-known Shakhtior and Metallurg. The team is currently in 7th place in the local championship (Premier League). Its main achievement is to have been champion of the 2nd division in 2014. To be honest, even my agent was surprised when he found out that I wanted to study to become a coach in Ukraine, but I was firm in my decision,” explained Yaya Toure. It is not so easy to find a place where you can quietly, without unnecessary pressure, study, where you will be accepted as a friend.
Olimpik did not specify the exact length of Yaya Toure’s contract but said that he “will work as an assistant to Igor Klimovsky until the summer of 2021”.
